reviewing the prevalence rate of hyponatremia in psychotic patients admitted in psychiatric ward of farshchian hospital in hamadan

aim and background: psychotic patients are at the risk of hyponatremia due to numerous reasons .given that severe hyponatremia can cause serious risks including seizures, coma and death, taking the symptoms into account seems necessary when patients referring to medical centers. therefore, the present study aimed to determine the prevalence rate of hyponatremia in psychotic patients in farshchian hospital. methods and materials: this was descriptive-analytical study done on 112 psychotic patients admitted in psychiatric ward of frashchian in 2006. at the first days of admission, the serum electrolytes concentration (na/k) and urine specific gravity (usg) were measured. in addition, the demografic data and data related to  disorder were recorded in the questionnaires. the obtained data were analyzed   with  descriptive model (like mean and percent) through spss version 13. findings: out of 112 patients, 68 of them (60.7%) were male and 44 of them (39.3%) were female with mean age of 38 years. the mean concentration of sodium and potassium in their blood was 141.1 and 4.43 meq/l, respectively. the mean concentration of urinary specific gravity was 1016. four cases of hyponatremia found in these patients. conclusion:  the prevalence rate of hyponatremia in psychotic patients of this study was 34.8 per a thousand people.
